Mary on Monday

I had a post all ready to go. The problem is that it hasn’t yet made it to the screen and it won’t, at least not today.

(You’ll have blogging days like that, right? For that matter, you’ll have blogging weeks like that!)

So for Mary Moment Monday, I’m going to send you to my recent column at Faith & Family Live, which is a reflection on the Annunciation. We celebrated that feast on Friday (don’t you just LOVE feasts that fall on Fridays of Lent?), but it’s one that I carry with me in a special way.

Because saying Yes in the right spirit is hard.

How often, I wondered to myself as I pondered his question, do I fail to distinguish between the voice of God and the voice of Sarah? How often do I give God “credit” for the desires of my heart, the ones that don’t really benefit anyone, myself included?

When’s the last time I told God Yes?

You’ll find it in its entirety over at Faith & Family Live.

Chickens!

-1-

I’m pretty sure that Lisa knows I’m not crazy, though Arwen can’t be so certain. (She loves me anyway, though.) After all, last weekend, we got ourselves some chickens!!! And, folks, I agreed to this!

If you want to hear about our new chickens from me directly–as in, me talking–head on over to this week’s Faith & Family Live Cast.

-2-

But, of course, you’re getting a rundown here, too. :) How could I not write about our new chickens?

After all, with this, I follow in the footsteps of one of my favorite people.

(My husband accused me of wanting chickens just so I could be like her. He was joking…sort of.)

-3-

So, without further ado…meet our chickens.

-4-

There are six of them, purchased last weekend from our local TSC. My husband’s been wanting to get chickens and we had planned this. We’re ordering more from a local feed store–these are the “testers.”

“If the girls love them to death,” he said, “No big deal.”

-5-

Poppa Gene, carpenter extraordinaire, is building us a chicken coop. Right now, to keep them safe from the cats and the dog and the myriad of other critters who would do them harm–oh, and to keep them warm–they’re living on the porch.

-6-

Best thing about them, so far?

They eat wasps!

(I have a long history with wasps. Those poor folks on Twitter know all about it, though I’ve posted rants in the past, too.)

-7-

And, for the stats: five of them are girls, one is…we’re not sure (in an unsexed run). We have two Rhode Island reds, one that will be white (we failed to note the breed), two Australorps, and one Bantam (that’s the one that might be a rooster).

They’re not named yet. This is…shocking to me. My girls name their play horses with a relish that I didn’t think could be tamed.

Maybe they’re just cooking up some REALLY GOOD names.

Or…maybe we should have a naming contest here. Hmmmmmmm…

Head on over to Conversion Diary for the Quick Takes round-up.

Mary in Other Places

I hope you’ll forgive me for doing a post on Mary Moment Monday where I just link to my other stuff…I’m preoccupied with, among other things, the Catholic Writers Conference Online.

So…here are some other places you’ll find me:

  • Faith & Family Live Cast, where it’s saint talk and Lenten debates with Rebecca Teti and Jen Fulwiler
  • Catholic Moments, where the Mary Moment continues our journey through the Glorious Mysteries with the Descent of the Holy Spirit
  • Uncommon Sense, where the Mary Minute with Chesterton considers fairy tales and Mary’s Yes
  • Catholic Foodie, where Mary in the Kitchen talks about one of my favorite kitchens and how the mom in charge of it so often reminds me of Mary
  • CatholicMom.com, where I’m talking about Lent (and not so much about Mary)

Bring on the Tea!

Nothing says “Bring on the tea!” quite like a chat on the Faith & Family podcast. This week, I’m the (rather dorky) (very self-conscious) (getting past all that) hostess. Hallie (who you might know as Betty), Rebecca, and I talk beauty and hospitality.

If you’re interested in the ponytail thingies that Hallie mentions, she did a post about them yesterday (and yes, I did click through and yes, I will be sampling them from the order I placed…my own ponytail could use some work!).

Something else–besides wacky, sudden, ice-and-rain-and-canceled-school February weather–that makes me want to boil water and break out the tea choices is Mama Mary. I keep waiting to be done with her, you know? I keep writing and exploring and being inspired by her in new ways. It’s a lot like my relationship with my husband, or my close friends, or, really, any other human being: there are an endless array of pleasant little surprises and discoveries, adding to the texture of your interaction.

This week in my column at CatholicMom.com, I’m exploring the waiting game. I’m a work-in-progress with waiting, but Mary stands before me, my teacher who’s oh-so-patient with me.

Even as the time flies, it often seems like I am rushing around in order to wait. Hurry here, hurry there…and then a half-hour wait. Get this done, get that done…and then two weeks of nothing. Rush around all over town, run like a crazy woman…and then slam on the brakes and make yourself comfortable.

Read the rest at CatholicMom.com.

Enjoy your weekend! I’ll be spending today with a dear, dear friend and a bunch of other women at the Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference. I am debating whether I should tuck some of my favorite tea into my diaper bag, because I’m pretty sure it will inspire me to want a hot cuppa. :) How about you? Got anything special going on?

Other Places You’ll Find Me This Week

Here’s the round-up of where you’ll hear me:

And though I haven’t been doing much writing elsewhere, I do have a new piece up at CatholicMom.com: The Lesson of Afghans.

And now, I’m off to gear up for the “fake birthday” party for a six-year-old who I’m surprised slept at all last night. Have a great day!

Catching Up Edition of Quick Takes

-1-

Tomorrow, I hit the “official” 36-week mark with this pregnancy. The baby’s due on December 4th, and yes, I have designs on a few Marian feasts within a number of days of that date, but…I’ve reached The Point. You know it, don’t you? It’s the point where the baby can come out, no matter if I’m ready or not.

Though I’m at The Point, the TRUTH is, I want to keep the kid inside as long as I can. I have NO DOUBT things are easier NOW, while baby’s tucked away inside me (however much I may feel little limbs in my ribs and have sudden attacks that send me to the bathroom like a potty-training three-year-old).

All of that is by way of asking you, ever humbly, to keep us in your prayers. There is always worry for me in a pregnancy, though I’ve been very blessed during this pregnancy to be awash in peace and somehow protected from the anxieties that plagued me with both of my other pregnancies. Whether we have a healthy baby or not, whether things go “well” or “as planned” or not, please keep us in your prayers. It can’t hurt. :)

I realized the other day that I have been really slacking in the taking-pictures-of-my-kids department. In October, I took pictures twice, once on the 2nd and once on the 30th. Because of that, yesterday while we were waiting for the bus, I took the camera outside and captured some moments of everyday life: kids and dogs running around in the warm sunshine, under the blue sky.

-3-

Speaking of warm sunshine and blue sky, when I saw that it was not raining yesterday, as my husband told me it might, I hung blankets and sheets out on the line. In November. It was just too nice not to. Still felt a little crazy, though.

-4-

I have been really enjoying the Uncommon Sense podcast. I haven’t read much Chesterton (it’s on my to-do, believe me), but I’m learning a lot about him, and man, what’s not to love about Nancy Brown’s style of podcasting? I especially recommend the two episodes on Frances Chesterton here and here.

-5-

Have you read Elizabeth Esther‘s Mary series, “How Mary brought me back to Jesus”? So far, there is only a part 1 and part 2, but they are incredible. I love how candid she is (but that’s something to love about her anyway), and I love how she makes Mary such a person in her writing. It’s totally worth your time to make time to read these.

-6-

This is for anyone who just needs a smile today:

-7-

One of my favorite parts of this week was the chat I shared with Lisa Hendey and Lynn Wehner on this week’s Faith & Family Live Cast (link updated). I was especially touched by our discussion about community, as it’s something I’ve struggled with too in my local area. We also talked about an awesome product (talk about crazy craftiness!) and preparing for Advent. Join us, won’t you? We’d love to have your thoughts and keep the conversation going!

What was the best part of your week?

You’ll find Quick Takes every week at Conversion Diary, where Jen not only keeps everything organized, she also feeds us with meaty and faith-filled, humor-ridden, glorious-to-read posts. You’ll find this week’s round-up here.

I was over at Faith & Family Live all week, and here’s the wrap-up of my posts over there:

Thanks to everyone who joined me over at Faith & Family Live and welcome to everyone who has found me here thanks to the links over there.

In case you missed my radio debut, here’s the link. Lisa Hendey and I talked things rosary and Mary and family while she guest hosted Greg & Lisa Popcak’s “Heart, Mind and Strength” show. It was an honor and joy to have the chance to talk to Lisa.
