In which I jump up and down for Quick Takes

A reader sent me this picture a week or so ago, and then gave me permission to use it.

Is your family using Welcome Risen Jesus? I’d love to hear how it’s working for you.

As for my family, well. Let’s just say I’m having a lesson in parental humility and big failures this Lent. There’s always next year…

Last week, I came home from a conference and within two hours had a puking kid and a very sick husband.

I had a talk scheduled for Tuesday with a local moms group, but I canceled it, sadly.

I couldn’t leave them in the lurch, though, so I recorded a little intro (which is verrrrry bad, click through at your own risk) and my Mary for Moms talk.

Then after they listened to my talk, we connected via Skype.

It was an awesome work-around, and in November, I’m looking forward to actually meeting this group of ladies in person. Don’t they look sweet?

(My boy was reaching out across the computer screen to a few of those other little guys. It was very sweet.)

On Wednesday last week, I went down with some virus thing.

Turns out maybe it wasn’t food poisoning for the sick kid and the husband.

And, in more delightful news, I have hard and fast proof that Catholic Family Fun: A Guide for the Adventurous, Overwhelmed, Creative, or Clueless is in the publishing house.

See that? That is someone AT Pauline, holding my book in their hot little hands.

(It’s actually Holly in marketing, and she is every bit as much of a cutie patootie as I thought she’d be.)

Catholic Family Fun: A Guide for the Adventurous, Overwhelmed, Creative, or CluelessAnd check THIS news out…

The book is available on Pauline’s bookstore! Yay!

So let’s have a contest!

Order a copy and leave a comment by next Wednesday, March 28, and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a Snoring Scholar SurPrize Pack.

My kids will draw names out of a basket next Thursday, March 29 and I’ll announce the winners as part of next week’s Quick Takes.

You can enter once for every copy you purchase. Let the FUN begin!

What ‘s in the prize pack? How many winners? Well, that’s a surprise. :)

So, how about a plug for my other writing, too? It’s not like there’s grass growing under my keyboard.

For one thing, there’s my ongoing series at New Evangelizers. This week, I’m talking about how balance doesn’t always mean giving something (like the internet, say) up. In fact, giving it up would be, in some ways, easier than my current, ongoing struggle with balance.

There’s also my post at Amazing Catechists about calling in sick, something that’s oh-so-hard for a perfectionist-who-loves-her-volunteering to do. Unless there’s puking and passing out involved. Then it gets easier. I simply couldn’t move.

I took the week off from posting at CatholicMom.com and recording a Mary Moment for iPadre, but I’ll be back next week as usual.

I also have a book proposal I promised to get to my editor by March 31. Since she follows this blog (in theory, anyway), I’m going to just smile and keep quiet about the status. (It’s in God’s hands, folks, GOD’S HANDS.)

This week, I’ve been teaching two blogging forums for the first week of the two-week Catholic Writers Conference Online. It’s such fun! More about it next week or the week after, when I have time to gather my thoughts a bit. (The interacting there is keeping me hopping, and I feel like I’m not doing as much as I should.)

It’s great to get together with other writers and encourage each other, even if we can’t do it often in person.

Which brings me to this bit of awesomeness: 30K for Christ!

You’ve heard of National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo), right? Those of us who don’t write fiction watch in wonder as those who do attempt to complete an entire novel in the month of November.

30K for Christ is for the rest of us (and hey, we let fiction writers in, too), and it has a Christian focus. You write 30,000 words during the month of April (any kinds of words–novel, blogging, book, journaling, whatever), but you do it for Christ and with Christ.

If you’re on Twitter, join in with the hashtag #30K4JC.

Quick Takes on Costumes, Books, & Advent

The Angel, the Horse, and the Cutie Patootie

My camera is broken. It’s been broken for a while, but I only just figured out that there’s no fixing the blurry pictures. Good thing for my sister-in-law, huh?

Put this on your to-read list.

I am trying my best to whip through Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith, by Fr. Robert Barron, but I’m not having much success. That’s not because it’s not a terrific, fabulous, amazing book. In fact, I stand behind what I said the other day: it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year. So if you haven’t already put it on your to-read, to-buy, to-own-and-share list, do it!

Trying not to panic

All of a sudden, I’m seeing SANTAS in the store.

How can this be?

Christmas is MONTHS away, right?

Right?

RIGHT?

And…isn’t ADVENT first?

Advent preparation: easier said than done

Seeing as how I have a book designed to help you with your Advent, you would think I’d be prepared.

Especially since it’s newly available and I have some talks, interviews, and other Advent-preparation-themed things coming up in the next couple of weeks. You’d be WRONG.

My approach for pre-Advent

I’m taking my own Advent advice from last year, especially as it relates to doing only one thing, not comparing myself to others, and smiling.

Novenas, novenas, novenas

Pray More Novenas is a site after my own heart. You don’t have to rely on your RSS reader or even your ability to check the website: novenas can be delivered straight to your inbox. I hear rumor that there’s an app in the works too, and I am ALL OVER THAT, lemme tell ya!

I discovered this site last year, and though I don’t get the emails (inbox overload, anyone?), I have a good friend who has been praying along since I first mentioned it.

So there you go. Good stuff.

My first pie

I shared this on Facebook and Twitter, but I nearly forgot to give myself credit for my “first” pie crust.

Apple filling, of course.

My mother-in-law did the work, and though I “helped” (especially with the eating part) and though she counts it as my first pie, I am itching to try my hand at this in my own kitchen.

(By “itching,” I mean “in a few weeks when I have to” and by “in my own kitchen” I mean to imply that I plan to have my mother-in-law standing nearby to rescue me!)

My Blogging Talk at the CNMC MMX

For everyone who couldn’t make it and for anyone who’s slightly curious, here’s the uStream of my talk last weekend at the Catholic New Media Celebration (also embedded below). I follow the brilliantly talented Thomas Peters, of the American Papist blog, and my talk starts at 01:02:04 on this video (it’s worth watching and listening to his full speech (text here)).

The Best Part of CNMC MMX

It was the end of the day, though it hadn’t felt like a long day until the silence surrounded me.

I knelt, I genuflected, I prayed. I sat in the chapel, and I realized that I was in the best part of my day.

The Catholic New Media Celebration was fantastic. I met Facebook friends and blogging buddies. I networked and talked and yakked and laughed. I embarrassed myself (but hopefully not anyone else) and I shared.

But during those moments in the Adoration chapel, I was struck by what evangelization truly means, by the One I serve, the Light I follow.

The best part of the day, by far, was being able to take a few moments, however brief, and share them with Jesus. It was the tangible reminder of Who it is guiding the star of the New Evangelization.

A special thanks to the wonderful people who joined me during my talk on blogging content and catechesis. I collected their names and websites/blogs and will post that list in the next day or two.

Looking for Me?

You won’t find me HERE this weekend…because I’m at the Catholic New Media Celebration in Boston! Yay!

If you’re interested in my talk about blogging content and catechesis, it will be live on uStream at 11:35 AM EST on Saturday, August 7. (I’m not sure if it will be saved for later viewing or not. If so, I’ll link to it.)

Here’s the CNMC uStream schedule, and here’s the direct link to SQPN Live, where you’ll find the action.

What do YOU want to know?

I’ll be presenting about one of my favorite addictions pastimes activities, blogging, at the Catholic New Media Celebration, sponsored by the Star Quest Production Network (SQPN), in Boston in August.

It occurred to me that, since you come here, you might have some things YOU want me to address. (The talk will be recorded and available, whether you’re there or not.)

I’ve started contacting some of my blogging friends, but I’d like to hear from you too.  If you were sitting in the workshop with me leading the talk, what would you want me to address?

Not So Small After All

I was going to do a “real” post, and then I realized that, at least for me, these Thursday Small Successes are real, in every sense of the word.  So here goes…

1. I was given a small, gentle nudge about some neglected housework. Rather than pout (too much), I attacked the living room and instituted a new “no eating in the living room” (which is where the only TV is) rule.

2. I’ve been enforcing said “no eating in the living room” rule all week. Despite protests. Despite yelling. Despite threats of starvation for a certain dramatic five-year-old.

3.Though my life has been upside down and not-so-normal for a few weeks, and though it’s looking like it’s going to stay that way for at least another week or two (or three), I’m not freaking out.  I haven’t cried.  In fact, I have laughed every day this week.

4. (bonus!) Though I’ve seen the list of women I really admire who are attending the retreat I’m leading on Saturday, I haven’t had a panic attack or even freaked out.  I credit those prayers of late (mine and others’) and St. Michael, St. Joseph, and Mother Mary.  (Left to my own devices, freaking out would be inevitable.  Just thinking about trying to teach those wise women anything should have me curled in a ball sucking my thumb.  Despite that, I feel peace.  And that’s good this year.)

There are many more Small Successes (and plenty of great encouragement) at Faith & Family Live.
